Haryana judokas assert supremacy on opening day

Haryana bagged two gold and two bronze medals on the opening day of the Junior National Judo Championship at KIIT University campus in Bhubaneswar today. Over 500 judokas, including 235 girls from 30 states, union territories and defence establishments joined the four-day championship, which is being hosted by Orissa State Judo Association (OSJA). The host state fielded a 15-member squad, including five girls. Competitions were completed in five out of 44 weight classes for girls and boys under 14 to 17 and 17 to 20 year age groups on the opening day. The championship was earlier inaugurated by State Animal Resource Development Minister Damodar Rout in the presence of OSJA president Priyabrat Patnaik and secretary Gitanjali Panda. Balinder (Har), 2. N Surchandra (Man), 3. Vicky Kumar (Pun) and Pradip Sarkar (Tri). Boys 17-20 years: 56kg: 1. Anoop (Har), 2. Binoi Singh (SSCB), 3. Kenter (Man) and Ashish Thakur (Chd): 60kg: 1. Veer Bahadur Thappa (UP), 2. Harpreet Singh (Pun), 3. Sandeep (ITBP) and Kantharaj (Kar). Girls 14-17 years: 40kg: 1. Neha Thakur (Del), 2. Shivani Karnwal (UP), 3. Anjali (Pun) and Harjinder (Har). Girls 17-20 years: 44kg: 1. Nippu Jambal (J&K), 2. O Bidya Laxmi (Man), 3. Priya (Pun) and Anupal (Har).
